How to get repeat customers (they’re worth more than new ones)

Everyone obsesses over getting new customers. Meanwhile the cheapest, most profitable customers you'll ever have are the ones you already served. It costs far more to win a new customer than to bring back an old one, and repeat customers spend more and refer more. Yet most businesses do almost nothing to keep them. Here's how to fix that.

Actually follow up

The simplest thing, and almost nobody does it. After the sale or the job, follow up. A thank-you, a check-in, "how's everything working out?" It costs you a minute and it tells the customer you actually care, which is rarer than it should be. That one message is often the difference between a one-time buyer and a regular.

Stay in touch without being annoying

Out of sight is out of mind. A light, useful touch now and then keeps you the obvious choice when they need you again. A seasonal reminder, a quick tip, a heads-up on something relevant. Not constant sales blasts, just enough that they don't forget you exist. Email and text both work.

Make it stupidly easy to come back

Every extra step is a reason to go elsewhere. Make rebooking, reordering, or getting back in touch as easy as possible. A direct link, a saved account, a simple "reply to rebook." The less friction, the more repeat business, full stop.

Give them a reason to return

A loyalty perk, a returning-customer rate, first dibs on your calendar, a little extra for people who come back. It doesn't have to be a formal program. It just has to make loyal customers feel like loyalty pays, because when it does, they stay.

Chasing new customers while ignoring your old ones is like filling a bucket with a hole in it. Patch the hole first.

Deliver, then ask

None of this works if the experience was just okay. Repeat business starts with doing the work well enough that people want to come back. Nail that, then actually ask for the next visit, the review, the referral. Great service plus a simple ask is the whole formula.
