Websites

Do you need a website, or is social media enough?

It's a fair question, and you'll hear strong opinions both ways. Some people swear you just need Instagram. Others say no website means no business. Here's the honest answer: they do two completely different jobs, and for most businesses the real answer is both. But if you have to start with one, it depends on why.

Social media is rented land

Social is fantastic for getting discovered. People scroll, they find you, they see your work. But here's the catch: you don't own it. The platform owns your audience, controls who sees your posts, and can change the rules or shut your account off tomorrow with no warning. Building your entire business on rented land is a risk most people don't think about until it bites them.

Your website is land you own

A website is the one place online that's fully yours. Nobody can suspend it, throttle it, or bury it in an algorithm change. It's where people go to actually decide: to check if you're legit, read your reviews, and figure out how to hire you. Social gets attention. A website turns that attention into a customer.

Google basically requires one

Here's the part people forget: if you want to show up when someone searches for what you do, you need a website. Google can't rank a business that doesn't have a home online, and your social profiles rarely show up for the searches that actually bring in customers. No website means you're invisible for the exact moments people are looking to buy.

What actually happens without one

Businesses that run on social alone tend to hit the same walls: they lose the customers who wanted to research before buying, they vanish the moment their account has a problem, and they never show up in search. It can work for a while. It just caps how far you can go.

Social media is how people find you. Your website is how they decide to hire you. You want both, each doing its own job.

The simple version

Use social to get discovered and show your work. Use your website to build trust, show up on Google, and turn interest into actual customers. They're a team, not a competition. If you're running on social alone and it's starting to feel like a ceiling, that's usually the sign it's time for a real site.
